This video breaks down my portrait painting process in oil into five steps that beginners can use to paint faces more easily and effectively. The five steps I talk about are:
1. Pick good reference -- not shown
2. Start with a clear drawing -- 0:00
3. Block in your shadow shapes with a simple earth tone -- 0:20
4. Introduce big shapes of color -- 1:40
5. Gradually refine the big shapes of color into small shapes -- 2:40 til end
On top of these five steps, I have two principles I’ll discuss as well: the idea of going from areas of high confidence to areas of low confidence, and constantly looking for the most distracting error
