Recorded on 20 April 1969, take 26 included the basic arrangement: piano, bass, drums, guitar ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶o̶r̶g̶a̶n̶, and the live vocal performance. Unlike the final version of the song, the recording we are analyzing captures the spontaneous nature of the performance, allowing us to appreciate a more authentic interpretation of what Paul was aiming for.
*It is worth noting that Billy Preston’s organ performance was only featured in early versions of the song, but not in the final version*
In the performance analyzed, Paul's vocals already feature a 'slapback' effect (the same type of echo heard on ‘Come Together’). This effect was not introduced suddenly; McCartney had initially envisioned it when he made demo recordings at Twickenham Film Studios in 1969 while preparing for the 'Get Back' album with producer Glyn Johns. However, the use of this effect in the final version of the album, finished at Abbey Road studios, is much more restrained.
As is well known, McCartney would later return day after day to re-record the lead vocals, aiming for a worn, ‘on-the-road’ sound, as if he’d been singing it live all week. But in takes like this, you can already see the outline: the rawness, the effort, and the sonic ideas that would define the final performance, including his decision to sing the ending in falsetto so that his voice would last for at least another 70 years!
