Is there really a tuba in “Happiness Is a Warm Gun”? In the bridge of this Beatles track there’s a deep, uniform sound that many listeners describe as tuba-like. But the question remains: is it actually a hidden brass instrument, maybe even a trombone, or simply Paul McCartney on bass?
The tone is unusually dark and heavy, very close to a brass instrument. The notes are smooth and uniform, almost like a trombone slide, which makes it hard to believe it’s just a regular bass guitar. That sound could be imitated with a fretless electric bass, yet there’s no clear evidence that Paul used one in 1968 (Or by some band until that time). At the same time, the 2018 White Album Book Set don’t list any brass overdubs.
