Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief Alan Parker shared details about an officer-involved shooting after a man attacked two people. This happened along Jillian Drive off Ricker Road in the Westside.
Just after 7 p.m., a call for service was placed about a fight in the area. Officer Delong Zheng was in the area on patrol and responded. When he arrived, residents in the area flagged him down to point him towards the area in between two houses. A man and a woman were laying in between the house bleeding. A 58-year-old Hispanic man was over them holding two knives. Officer Zheng told the man to put the knives down, but the man did not comply. Instead, he moved to try to attack the two people again; that’s when the officer shot him. Other officers arrived quickly and rendered aid until paramedics arrived. The man passed away at the hospital.
The two people who were bleeding are being evaluated by medical staff, but they are expected to survive. The officer was not injured.
This is the 7th officer-involved shooting this year. The State Attorney’s Office is investigating. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct our own investigation.
