My new favourite subunit is a small octahedron of 36 magnets. This frame is made entirely from this building block, 4 per vertex, 20 vertices for the complete frame, so requiring 20 x 4 x 36 = 2880 neodymium ball magnets in total. I used exactly half and half golden and silver (nickel) coloured magnets. Geometrically this dodecahedral form is not mathematically exact but only an approximation, as rings of 15 octahedrons actually leave a small gap, but magnetic force closes the gaps in each of the 12 interconnected rings of 15 octahedrons in the completed structure, producing a pleasing final shape.

![Molecular Sphere Frame Of Spheres | 9846/9870 Neodymium Magnetic Balls
Built from 42 mini icosidodecahedron spheres, and 60 interconnecting struts. The spheres are 180 balls each when complete and reinforced internally for strength. 12 of the spheres are vertex connectors (decorated with rose gold) of one polarity with 5 attachment points, while the other 30 are of opposite polarity (decorated with yellow gold) with 2 attachment points each. Alternating polarity like this is essential to make strong interlocking connections throughout the structure. All attachment points on the spheres are across triangles of 9 balls, with 3 inner balls removed from each attachment point to make strong bonds. 3 more struts are added to the base for support in holding it up on one triangular face. I also oriented it in the video vertically, which required 5 tubes of 3 rings of 10 added to the 5 yellow gold connecting spheres around a single rose gold vertex sphere at the bottom.
A total magnet count therefore of:
165 × 12 [vertex spheres] + 174 × 30 [edge spheres] + (9 × 4 + 6 = 42) × 63 [hex/triangle connecting struts], an extra 3 for the base = 9846 magnets.
Vertical orientation total (-3 x 42) + (5 × 10 × 3 = 150) [extra base tubes] = 9870 Neoballs & Neocube magnets (5mm diameter).
This large finished structure is a precise geometric form, based on the computer graphic discovery by Kevan of channel 88625652 of a fascinating large icosahedral spherical frame formed from 102 interconnected icosahedrons, which can be seen here:
