Explore one of Southern California’s most iconic desert riding areas in this Ocotillo Wells SVRA Trail Review, featuring Blow Sand Hill, Shell Reef, and Pumpkin Patch Trail.
This Ocotillo Wells OHV Trail route starts off Highway 78 on Quarry Road, a washboarded desert road with whoops that leads to Blow Sand Hill. From there, we continue onto Shell Reef Expressway, a faster desert section that leads to Shell Reef, a raised ridgeline made from ancient fossilized shells. The route finishes on Pumpkin Patch Trail, where you’ll find ruts, loose rock, hill climbs, and the famous rounded sandstone formations that look like pumpkins scattered across the desert.
This route is rated 3/10 difficulty and is best for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles, though Ocotillo Wells SVRA is also popular with UTVs, ATVs, and dirt bikes. Recommended riding season is fall through spring.
