This video is of the presentation of a Special Health and Safety Award to the Occupational Health Internship Program (OHIP), at the Annual Awards Luncheon of the Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA) on November 5, 2013 at the APHA Annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. OHIP is a national program celebrating ten years of helping students learn about the field of occupational health and safety (OHS) from working people. OHIP has played a crucial role in training, mentoring and inspiring a new generation of OHS professionals, and is dedicated to providing worker organizations and local unions with resources to strengthen health and safety programs to prevent job injury and illness. OHIP is modeled after the successful internship program established in the 1970s by Tony Mazzocchi with the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) and the Montefiore Department of Social Medicine. Many APHA and OHS leaders started their careers with the original internship and credit their experience as formative in choosing their career path and inspiring them to revive a "new" internship program. OHIP retains the principles of the original OCAW/Montefiore program while adapting to the changed landscape of the 21st century workplace and workforce. Students are placed with a union or worker organization to investigate job-related health and safety concerns raised by workers. During their project, students interact directly with workers and observe working conditions to better understanding the complexity of the work environment. OHIP students play a vital role supporting some of the most exciting worker health and safety movements in the country. From taxi drivers to construction and health care workers, they contribute to stronger workplace standards and worker committees, create worker education materials and promote green jobs that are also safe jobs. Almost 200 students have worked with academic mentors and host organizations at 11 geographic sites. From varied backgrounds, they bring technical, social and language skills to reach today's diverse workforce. More than three-quarters have been women, two-thirds represent racial/ethnic minority groups, and nearly 90% are fluent in a second language. OHIP and its predecessor are highlighted in feature articles of the summer 2013 publication of New Solutions: a Journal of Environmental and Occupational Health Policy. OHIP is funded by NIOSH with additional support from unions, foundations and academic centers and with mentorship from APHA members across the country. ohip.aoec.org/.
