The Occupational Health and Safety Section (OHS) of the American Public Health Association (APHA) honored Walter Jones with its 2018 Alice Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Walter Jones, MS, CIH is Director of Occupational Safety and Health for the Laborers’ Health and Safety Fund of North America. He works closely with the Laborers’ field staff to meet the health and safety needs of union’s 500,000 members and affiliated contractors. He worked several years for the Teamsters Union before joining the Laborers’ Health and Safety Fund. Mr. Jones always has his ear to the ground to listen to front-line workers while engaging thoughtfully with contractors to ensure the jobs are safe. Mr. Jones has made tremendous contributions to the field of occupational safety and health, including serving on the OSHA Advisory Committee for Construction Safety and Health and he currently chairs the Building Trades Safety and Health Committee. He was actively involved in developing OSHA’s new silica standard and is helping educate contractors about how to comply with it. Mr. Jones has also been Chair of the APHA Occupational Health and Safety Section and has taken a leading role in mentoring young professionals in the field. He cares deeply about worker health and safety and is always thinking strategically about how to advance their issues, how to market safety to contractors and demonstrate to them that it is in their interest to protect their workers on the job. This award is named for Dr. Alice Hamilton (1869-1970), a tireless activist who dedicated her life to improving the health and safety of workers. The award was presented at the OHS Section’s awards luncheon on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the San Diego Convention Center, during the APHA’s 146th Annual Meeting & Expo from Nov. 10-14, 2018.
