Joel Mull was born Aquarius in Stockholm in 1975.
Receiving his first synthesizer at the age of six, Joel has begun his long and successful music career by taking piano lessons soon after. From the age of ten to sixteen, Joel attended Music School in Stockholm, using most of his time playing keyboards and singing in numerous capacities. Joel got into electronic music via Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode. As it is the case with many of the today’s dance music luminaries, his early musical explorations gave him a solid base upon which he would continue building on.
In 1991, at an outdoor “rave” party in Stockholm, Joel experienced a musical style he had never heard before. In the lights of his discovery of techno, he has found his passion. Soon after, Joel began picking up mostly House and Techno from the Stockholm record shops. Nevertheless, he met Adam Beyer at school, who spent his lunch breaks teaching Joel how to mix and play records with the pair of Technics 1210 he had at home. In 1993 Joel bought an Ensoniq sampler and DJ equipment of his own, and from that moment, he confidently took off into realms of electronic music.
Joel found inspiration to pursue a full time DJ career in 1995. From that point on, he has consistently flexed his musical background with his range of productions and superb choice of label releases. After many releases on different labels around the world, Joel felt that it was time to take control over his music and in 1998 a new project was born: “Inside Records.” Since then there has been a continuous release flow of quality dance-floor techno 12” from his studio in Stockholm.
Working with Adam Beyer as the duo “Safety Session,” the two have received an overwhelming response to their releases. Being a contemporary musician with rare training and a good ear has led Joel down the path of electronic music. As DJ and live act, Joel has been performing in numerous countries across the Globe. He has become an artist to be watched and followed. Joel Mull is a perfect example of the successful contemporary techno artist.

Karl OConnor is most certainly Regis and it is also highly probable that he propagates other pseudonyms . This has only added to the greater mythology surrounding the influential Downwards label that he has run with fellow art terrorist Peter Sutton ( Female ) since 1993. Unconventional and single-minded to say the least ( what label can boast a back catalogue free of the industry standard cash cow remix ) by decentralising the focus on the dj/producer personality, he remains one of the more highly regarded creative forces within the British techno/electronic scene. Degenerate art indeed.

Robert Hood makes minimal Detroit techno with an emphasis on soul and experimentation over flash and popularity. Having recorded for Metroplex, as well as the Austrian Cheap label and Jeff Mills Axis label. Hood started Hardwax in 1991 (Robert Hoods first label prior to forming M-Plant) and also owns and operates the M-Plant imprint (including the two sublabels Drama and Duet) through which he has released the bulk of his solo material. Hood was a founding member, along with Jeff Mills and Mike Banks, of the Underground Resistance label, whose influential releases throughout the early and mid 90s helped change the face of modern Detroit techno and sparked a creative renaissance. Infusing elements of acid and industrial into a potent blend of Chicago house and Detroit techno, URs aesthetic project and militant business philosophy were (and remain) singular commitments in underground techno. Hood left Detroit (and UR) with Jeff Mills in 1992, setting up shop in New York and recording a series of 12 EPs. Through the mid 90s, Hood has focused on his solo work, setting up M-Plant in 1994 and releasing singles such as Internal Empire, Music Data and Moveable Parts. Although his desire to remain underground has been replaced by an urge to reach a wider audience, Hood remains fiercely critical of artistic and economic movements destructive to inner-city communities and has combined his musical enterprises with outreach and social activist ends. His debut Peacefrog album Point Blank took Hoods hypnotic minimalism to entirely new depths and territories, whilst his latest album Wire To Wire takes his productions onto new levels of musicality and sophistication within the world of electronic music.

Monrella Mick Harris
Closely allied with post-industrial dub terrorists such as Bill Laswell, Techno Animal, James Plotkin, Robert Musso, and Anton Fier, Birmingham-based artist Mick Harris is something of a study in extremes. A drummer with noted death metal outfit Napalm Death through the groups late-80s and early-90s heyday, Harris began experimenting with monochrome ambient and dub styles toward the tail end of his association with that group. Releasing material through Earache as Scorn (his ambient dub aegis) and through Sentrax as Lull, in addition to other sporadic projects, his genre-spanning activities have done much to jar the minds, expectations, and record collections of audiences previously kept aggressively opposed. Scorn and Lull, along with John Zorns experimental jazz-dubcore outfit Pain Killer, have remained Harris primary ongoing projects, although one-off collaborations with the likes of James Plotkin, Nicholas Bullen, Bill Laswell, and Martyn Bates are common. Harris formed Scorn in 1991 in collaboration with bassist Nick Bullen, incorporating elements of ambient, industrial, dub, rock, and hip-hop. The group (though pared back to just Harris following Evanescence) has released a number of increasingly well-received full-length recordings, including the remix LP Ellipsis, which features outbound reworkings by the likes of Coil, Autechre, Laswell, and Germ. Harris solo work as Lull focuses on darker, more isolationist ambient soundscapes, some of which have been reissued domestically by Laswells now-defunct Subharmonic imprint.

SURGEON
Surgeon, real name Anthony Child, has been at the forefront of UK techno since 1994
His debut “Surgeon EP” is regarded by many as seminal, and along with several early Downwards releases, caused a ripple of excitement through th e techno cognoscenti of the time. Surgeon released a further three albums on Tresor, numerous Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension EPs and LPs “Body Request” in 2000, “Breaking The Frame” LP in 2011, and “From Farthest Known Objects” in 2016.
Over the course of his career, the Birmingham resident has perfected a unique and uncommonly effective production style. His is a tough techno sound with an industrial murk about it but also plenty of funk, swing and a sophisticated sense of dub-space learned in part from his Chain Reaction contemporaries in Berlin.
“Proving that hard can also be smart, sensuous and danceable, the influence of Surgeon on the 2010-ruling Ostgut/Berghain sound DJs/producers like Marcel Dettmann, Shed et al is substantial”. (Fact Magazine)
Over the years Surgeon has shown his versatility as a musician with releases under his own name on Editions Mego (“Electronic Recordings from Maui Jungle Vol. 1”), NNA Tapes (“The Space Between People And Things”) and K2 O & FatCat Records (“Guitar Treatments”) which break all the usual boundaries of electronic dance music.
Further evidence of these multi-functional production skills can be seen on Surgeon’s impressive remix CV, working with the biggest names in techno (Dave Clarke, Luke Slater/PAS, Green Velvet, Hardfloor, the Black Dog etc), Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Glasgow post-rock outfit Mogwai, old masters Faust and Coil, and most recently, artists such Moderat, Shed, Traversable Wormhole and Scuba.
“Surgeon calmly rolled with whatever life threw at him, a sit-down ambient set in a yurt at Freerotation? Sure. Jamming in front of several thousand bewildered Lady Gaga fans? Why not?” (Resident Advisor Top DJs of 2014)
Recently dubbed by FACT magazine as arguably the finest techno DJ in the world, Surgeon is also naturally one of the most in-demand, with DJ mixes for Warp and Fabric and a schedule spread across Europe and Japan. He has played every key club/event/festival going, helped pioneer Birmingham’s House of God and held a 3 year residency at Tresor (Berlin) during its all-powerful 1990s peak. He was also one half of the much loved BMB (British Murder Boys) with Regis. He’s currently performing improvised live sets with Lady Starlight and also with Blawan as TRADE.
Contemporary Surgeon sets are notable for experimentation with new DJ technologies embracing cutting edge hardware, increasingly blurring the line between a DJ set and a live performance. Surgeon is a selector of some skill and one of the most inventive, intuitive users of Ableton out there. Using techno as a vehicle to carry his artistic message, he also mixes up everything from contemporary bass music/dubstep to Rephlex-esque electronica to create a coherent, intense and righteously banging whole.
