SURGEON
Surgeon, real name Anthony Child, has been at the forefront of UK techno since 1994
His debut “Surgeon EP” is regarded by many as seminal, and along with several early Downwards releases, caused a ripple of excitement through th e techno cognoscenti of the time. Surgeon released a further three albums on Tresor, numerous Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension EPs and LPs “Body Request” in 2000, “Breaking The Frame” LP in 2011, and “From Farthest Known Objects” in 2016.
Over the course of his career, the Birmingham resident has perfected a unique and uncommonly effective production style. His is a tough techno sound with an industrial murk about it but also plenty of funk, swing and a sophisticated sense of dub-space learned in part from his Chain Reaction contemporaries in Berlin.
“Proving that hard can also be smart, sensuous and danceable, the influence of Surgeon on the 2010-ruling Ostgut/Berghain sound DJs/producers like Marcel Dettmann, Shed et al is substantial”. (Fact Magazine)
Over the years Surgeon has shown his versatility as a musician with releases under his own name on Editions Mego (“Electronic Recordings from Maui Jungle Vol. 1”), NNA Tapes (“The Space Between People And Things”) and K2 O & FatCat Records (“Guitar Treatments”) which break all the usual boundaries of electronic dance music.
Further evidence of these multi-functional production skills can be seen on Surgeon’s impressive remix CV, working with the biggest names in techno (Dave Clarke, Luke Slater/PAS, Green Velvet, Hardfloor, the Black Dog etc), Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Glasgow post-rock outfit Mogwai, old masters Faust and Coil, and most recently, artists such Moderat, Shed, Traversable Wormhole and Scuba.
“Surgeon calmly rolled with whatever life threw at him, a sit-down ambient set in a yurt at Freerotation? Sure. Jamming in front of several thousand bewildered Lady Gaga fans? Why not?” (Resident Advisor Top DJs of 2014)
Recently dubbed by FACT magazine as arguably the finest techno DJ in the world, Surgeon is also naturally one of the most in-demand, with DJ mixes for Warp and Fabric and a schedule spread across Europe and Japan. He has played every key club/event/festival going, helped pioneer Birmingham’s House of God and held a 3 year residency at Tresor (Berlin) during its all-powerful 1990s peak. He was also one half of the much loved BMB (British Murder Boys) with Regis. He’s currently performing improvised live sets with Lady Starlight and also with Blawan as TRADE.
Contemporary Surgeon sets are notable for experimentation with new DJ technologies embracing cutting edge hardware, increasingly blurring the line between a DJ set and a live performance. Surgeon is a selector of some skill and one of the most inventive, intuitive users of Ableton out there. Using techno as a vehicle to carry his artistic message, he also mixes up everything from contemporary bass music/dubstep to Rephlex-esque electronica to create a coherent, intense and righteously banging whole.

JAMES RUSKIN
Croydon born (1972) and based techno producer and DJ. James Ruskin comes from a background that first put him in touch with hip hop and electro and later with the emerging Detroit techno scenes. This inspired him to become a DJ in 1991 and venture into production with studio-partner Richard Polson by 1994. Founded Blueprint with Polson in 1996. As Blueprint grew, he delivered his first solo releases and appeared elsewhere as remixer and co-producer.

LABEL: BLUEPRINT
Blueprint was founded in 1996 by James Ruskin and Richard Polson who recorded the labels first release as Outline.
The first few releases came in quick succession and immediately had an impact on the techno scene, during an era when dancefloor techno was suffering a drought of fresh artists. A chance meeting led to the second release on the label being Oliver Hos debut. Since then the artist roster has been largely centred around the work of those 3 artists, although Polsons later contributions have been as one half of The 65D Mavericks alongside his current production partner Nick Dunton. Surgeon has also made an appearance.

BIOGRAPHY BEN SIMS
Since creating his label Theory Recordings towards the end of 1997, the London DJ and producer Ben Sims has not stopped responding to the call of the jungle in which the dance floor becomes when he is in the booth. Only an animal of the dishes like Ben Sims is able to break the maxim that says that the good producer is rather limited when it is put to mix or vice versa. His technique is exquisite -he started to take an interest in hip hop when he was only ten years old- and his productions enjoy full board in the suitcases of the most famous DJs on the techno planet. That magical triumvirate that form texture, rhythm and groove has no secrets for the Briton who, like so many others, has background in pirate radio stations. From there to the booths of some small clubs that start to trust in house and hip hop - many of their followers would pay for an audio of some of those seminal sets - until the Sims cache starts to raise zeros after being hired. by the Berlin agency Dy-Na-Mix. With the signing, it is raining offers to reside clubs such as The Orbit, Voodoo and House of God. Thats when Ben Sims begins to heel towards techno but without forgetting his funk roots. In fact, his first productions are indebted to a combination between Chicago Funk and tribal house (something obscure). It becomes one of the faces of what some call tribal Techno. Maybe Manipulated - and the remix that made him the Swedish Adam Beyer - is his best known track by the general public. In some interviews Sims has described his musical production as a natural continuation of his youthful interests. He also recognizes that what he likes best is to play, well above production - he always adduces that his is a solo exercise - although afterwards that purely onanistic activity appears on different labels, Primate, Primevil, Code Red, Tresor, Phont Music and Pure Plastic, and end up in the hands of Jeff Mills or Carl Cox.
In 2013 he is responsible for a new installment of the Fabric series where he has been a fixture in recent years, both as a DJ and producer, with a mix composed of 44 themes inspired by the dark Room 2 of the London club. A year later he decides to close his label Theory and does it through the front door, with a triple vinyl that includes a handful of songs signed by the veteran British artist accompanied by remixes of Surgeon, Marcel Dettmann, DVS1 and Luke Slater as Planetary Assault Systems.

Karl OConnor is most certainly Regis and it is also highly probable that he propagates other pseudonyms . This has only added to the greater mythology surrounding the influential Downwards label that he has run with fellow art terrorist Peter Sutton ( Female ) since 1993. Unconventional and single-minded to say the least ( what label can boast a back catalogue free of the industry standard cash cow remix ) by decentralising the focus on the dj/producer personality, he remains one of the more highly regarded creative forces within the British techno/electronic scene. Degenerate art indeed.

LABEL: Infrastructure New York
Label run by David Sumner (aka Function) and Ed Davenport (aka Inland)
David Sumner (aka Function) has teamed up with long time colleague Ed Davenport (aka Inland) to relaunch and together run Sumner’s esteemed Infrastructure New York imprint. The label has been dormant since 2006 when Sumner put it on hold to focus his energies on Sandwell District before eventually relocating to Berlin in 2007.
Now, having let the dust settle after what turned out to be both a landmark and hugely transitional 2013 – with debut Function album, ‘Incubation’, on Ostgut Ton; the Fabric 69 Sandwell District mix CD; the start of an official monthly residency at Berghain, and signing to the mighty Ostgut Ton bookings agency – Sumner has decided that the time is now right to resurrect Infrastructure.
Having worked towards the relaunch for more than two years, Sumner already has more than a year’s worth of releases lined up for Infrastructure, with the first 12” being the Function/Inland collaboration ‘Odeon/Rhyl’. The first official release for what is planned to be an ongoing musical partnership, ‘Odeon/Rhyl’ sees the two producers combining glacial ambient melodies and brooding, textured techno rhythms – the A-side is a rework of Photek’s ‘Under The Palms’, with the the UK producer giving his personal blessing to the sample.
“The focus will be on melding classic ideals with a modern viewpoint, which will come across not only in the music but in the way we are structuring the release schedule: It will not only be new releases but also a healthy serving of reissue packages and licenses. The players involved in the label will be Ed, myself, Adam X, Vatican Shadow and Mark Archer (Altern8/Nexus 21), as well as appearances by Luke Slater and Marcel Dettmann. But most importantly, I am also honored to be breaking two new artists: 23 year-old classically trained, Australian outsider talent Campbell Irvine, and a very good old friend and Cocoliche resident, the Argentinian powerhouse Mariano DC.” - David Sumner aka Function
Campbell Irvine’s debut EP ‘Removal Of The Six Armed Goddess’ will be the second release of Infrastructure’s new era, with a comprehensive retrospective album of Sumner’s previous work set to follow later in the year.
Originating in Midtown Manhattan in 1996, with it’s first release in 1998, Infrastructure started at the legendary Inanimate Objects – a recording studio and performance space located on the 15th floor of the famous “Music Building” at 251 West 30th Street, above the Downtime venue and Rogue Music vintage synthesizer shop (where Sumner worked with the likes of Dennis Ferrer, Donnacha Costello and Bailter Space’s Brent McLachlin) and overlooking Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building.
Sumner first began releasing as Function on Damon Wild’s Synewave imprint in 1996. Following those first soughtafter releases, he decided to launch Infrastructure to act as an independent, sporadic outlet for his music, free from the constraints of a more formal label template. Over the course of the next 8 years and 11 releases, the label built on the foundations of the Function sound, as well as providing a platform for Sumner’s multitude of pseudonyms and collaborations.
Infrastructure was more than just a record label but a production company as well, with it’s sights set both locally and globally: Sumner was responsible for organizing his Substance event series throughout the city, focused mainly on curating the bookings at Peter Gatien’s post-Warhol, club kid-laden downtown hotspot ‘Limelight’, where he held his first residency in 1992-1994, then later from 1999-2002 and again in 2004-2006 when the venue changed hands and became ‘Avalon’, where he was also organizing his event series, Phono. Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, DJ Hell, Kevin Saunderson, Claude Young, Surgeon, Adam X, Ben Sims, James Ruskin, Adam Beyer, Oliver Ho, DJ Pete, Sleeparchive, Sammy Dee and Zip, Ellen Allien and Trevor Jackson were among the many stalwart talents he invited as guests.
