a belated gift for my dad. i've complained about him time and time again but it never made it into a song, and i understand why now. it was because we were going to talk again one day. two unexpected seizures into my life... i just want to write something kind and take my time.
this can probably be seen as a lot of different fandoms/games if you squint, but my siblings and i played plenty of stuff with our dad over time, so it's inevitable. the main reference is to frances hodgson burnett's A Little Princess, both the 1909 novel and the 1995 film -- they have different endings in each, and i adore both. i appreciate that she sat in french class for so long while being fluent, and i love my parents for sharing that film with me when it was released in the year of my birth. there's nothing that can come between us anymore except the passage of time, and misunderstandings.
a secondary reference would probably be to anything cat valente has ever done. she gave me my camera back. she gave me my goddamn camera back. it may not be a reference you'd understand, so i'll give you another: i would give her my heart on a platter if i could, but i know she's read sleeping beauty and you can't out-wit the girl in the garden. this song started in 2020 as nothing but a concept in response to the demo i did of "SOMETHING" that year. i've finally fleshed it out. sorry for those who were looking for something else.
