National has taken the bull by the horns on tax, laying down a classic political trap for Labour. They want Labour to put a price tag on their spending promises and come clean on which taxes will go up before voters head to the polling booth. It is a classic "show me the money" play designed to force Labour out into the open.
But National cannot expect to stand on the sidelines without facing the same questions. While they claim $51 billion in savings, shifting money from one budget bucket to another is not the same as cutting spending. With government debt servicing costing $9 billion a year, the equivalent of four Dunedin hospitals every year, voters deserve straight answers from both sides.
