OXFORD, U.K. — The U.K.-based Joint European Torus laboratory has broken its own world record for the largest amount of energy extracted from a nuclear fusion reaction, according to the BBC, more than doubling the previous record set in 1997.

The experiment was able to generate 59 megajoules of heat over five seconds by fusing two isotopes of hydrogen, known as deuterium and tritium, to form helium gas.

Though this is only about enough energy to boil 60 kettles’ worth of water, the project’s head of operations told the BBC that it demonstrates the ability to “create a mini star inside of our machine and hold it there for five seconds and get high performance,” and the BBC explains that, crucially, this “validates design choices” at the larger International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor being built in France.

The massive ITER facility is supported by a number of governments across the world, including EU member states, the U.S., China and Russia, and is hoped to be the final step in proving nuclear fusion can become a reliable energy provider in the second half of this century. According to its CEO, if the Joint European Torus laboratory’s experiments hadn’t proved successful, there would have been major doubts about the chances of success at the ITER, so the new record represents a relief for many involved in both projects.

$‘Immortal’ Tardigrades: Most Resilient Animals in the Universe Survive Most Extreme Conditions Yet SINGAPORE — Microscopic tardigrades have previously been shot out of guns, exposed to intense ultraviolet radiation and bathed in boiling-hot water, as well as accidentally crash-landing on the moon, in the course of scientists testing the limits of their ‘tun’ state, where their metabolism drops to almost zero and they are able to survive extreme conditions. Now they’ve been used in an attempt show that a multicellular organism can become “quantum entangled,” which, according to Live Science, is when separate particles become ‘bound’ to one another so a change to ones spin or momentum instantaneously changes the other’s, even when large distances separate them. For a research paper uploaded to preprint repository arXiv, scientists froze three tardigrades to a fraction of a degree above absolute zero, sending them into a tun state, and then placed between two capacitor plates of a superconductor circuit that formed a quantum bit, or ‘qubit.’ When they made contact with this, its resonant frequency shifted. This tardigrade-qubit-hybrid was then coupled to a second circuit, the two qubits became entangled, and subsequently the frequency of all three parts changed in tandem. However, the study’s ‘entanglement’ conclusions have been widely challenged, with Phys.org summarising that: “placing a tardigrade on top of a qubit could result in altering the frequency of the qubit, but that is not the same thing as the two being entangled,’ before adding: “Also, the tardigrade was not able to act as a single quantum object.” Showing tardigrades can resume regular existence after experiencing conditions near absolute zero and pressures as low as 0.000006 millibars for up to 17 days, then, may be the experiment’s most notable outcome, with the arXiv preprint noting that one of the three tardigrades was successfully revived after the experiment’s completion. $Antarctica’s Doomsday Glacier Likely to Break Apart in Next Five Years ANTARCTICA — The Thwaites Eastern Ice Shelf, which acts as a dam to slow the flow of ice off Antarctica into the ocean, has a series of fractures spanning almost the entire shelf that could break it up within five years. The shelf sits at the front of one third of the massive Thwaites Glacier, forebodingly known as the ‘Doomsday Glacier’ for its capacity to release massive sea-level rises should it melt. At the moment, though it is already thinning, the shelf’s leading edge is pinned in place by an underwater ridge, which means its ice flow speed is a third of that seen in the glacier’s western side. However, a presentation at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union cited by the BBC explained that the shelf is likely to become uncoupled from the ridge very soon and even if that doesn’t occur, developing fractures in the ice shelf will almost certainly break it up, which will release large sections of the glacier behind it into the ocean. Glaciologist Erin Pettit explained to Science Magazine that the shelf is like a windshield with a series of slowly opening cracks: “You’re like, I should get a new windshield. And one day, bang — there are a million other cracks there,” she said. Science Magazine adds that the collapse of the entire Thwaites Glacier, which some researchers think is only centuries away, would raise global sea level by 65 centimeters. And because Thwaites occupies a deep basin into which neighboring glaciers would flow, this could eventually lead to the loss of the entire West Antarctic Ice Sheet, causing 3.3 meters of global sea level rise.$
