SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — There are currently around 170 million pieces of space debris flying at very high velocities in Earth orbit.

This number is set to increase as thousands of mini satellites are being added to the dangerous mix every year. Here are the details:

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that a new scientific study is looking at ways to keep the Earth from growing a visible ring made entirely of junk.

The study found that there are currently 170 million pieces of space junk in orbit around the Earth.

Of these, 23,000 are larger than a softball and dangerous enough to be tracked by the U.S. Department of Defense.

One of the study’s contributors, robotics professor Jake Abbot of the University of Utah, said that “Earth is on course to have its own rings. They’ll just be made of junk.”

The 170 million pieces of space junk travel at extremely high speeds and can each cause severe damage to spacecraft and astronauts.

This number is expected to rise sharply, as SpaceX and Amazon are currently putting thousands of small satellites in orbit per year.

Professor Abbot told the Salt Lake Tribune that space junk pieces always spin, so they would break robotic arms, which is why he and his team are looking at building spacecraft with highly specialized magnets to catch and collect debris in Earth orbit.

Any future world war would exponentially increase the number of dangerous space junk pieces, as major nations are building up arsenals of anti-satellite missiles that would blow up thousands of satellites and create billions of pieces of space debris.

$Antarctica’s Doomsday Glacier Likely to Break Apart in Next Five Years ANTARCTICA — The Thwaites Eastern Ice Shelf, which acts as a dam to slow the flow of ice off Antarctica into the ocean, has a series of fractures spanning almost the entire shelf that could break it up within five years. The shelf sits at the front of one third of the massive Thwaites Glacier, forebodingly known as the ‘Doomsday Glacier’ for its capacity to release massive sea-level rises should it melt. At the moment, though it is already thinning, the shelf’s leading edge is pinned in place by an underwater ridge, which means its ice flow speed is a third of that seen in the glacier’s western side. However, a presentation at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union cited by the BBC explained that the shelf is likely to become uncoupled from the ridge very soon and even if that doesn’t occur, developing fractures in the ice shelf will almost certainly break it up, which will release large sections of the glacier behind it into the ocean. Glaciologist Erin Pettit explained to Science Magazine that the shelf is like a windshield with a series of slowly opening cracks: “You’re like, I should get a new windshield. And one day, bang — there are a million other cracks there,” she said. Science Magazine adds that the collapse of the entire Thwaites Glacier, which some researchers think is only centuries away, would raise global sea level by 65 centimeters. And because Thwaites occupies a deep basin into which neighboring glaciers would flow, this could eventually lead to the loss of the entire West Antarctic Ice Sheet, causing 3.3 meters of global sea level rise.$

$Bob Saget Head Injury Like ‘Baseball Bat to the Head’ or Someone Who Had Fallen up to 30 Feet ORLANDO, FLORIDA — Comedian Bob Saget died after a fall fractured his skull in several places, according to an autopsy report by the chief medical examiner of Orange and Osceola counties in Florida, and according to experts cited by The New York Times, the extent of these fractures complicates initial descriptions of Saget’s death, in which it was suggested he may have hit his head, “thought nothing of it and went to sleep.” The basis for this conclusion is that it would be unusual for even a typical fall to cause fractures to the back, right side and front of the skull such as those suffered by Saget, with the chair in neurosurgery at Houston Methodist instead comparing the injuries to those found on someone hit with a baseball bat, or someone who has fallen from 20 or 30 feet. The proposed impact ruptured veins in the space between the membrane covering the brain and the brain itself, causing blood to pool, and experts cited by The New York Times concluded it was unlikely that Saget would have intentionally ignored this. Rather, it would likely have left him confused or unconscious.
