This drive covers the entire 19km Nova Scotia Highway 106 (Trans-Canada) from Highway 104 (Trans-Canada) just outside New Glasgow, through Pictou, and to its end at the Prince Edward Island Ferry. The ferry leaves Caribou, Nova Scotia, and connects to the community of Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island. The ferry takes approximately 75 minutes to cross the Northumberland Straight. There is no cost to travel to PEI, but, when leaving the Island, the charge for regular passenger cars is $70.
Both ferries opearted by Northumberland Ferries Limited (MV Confederation and MV Holiday Island) are owned by the Government of Canada and their operation is federally subsidized. The Canadian Constitution requires that the federal government maintains a ferry service to PEI for as long as it is a member of Confederation.
