Post-Procedure Recovery Timeline

Days 1 - 3
Reset & Recover: In the first three days following the procedure, it’s best to limit any excessive movement. If you’re flying in from out of town, you can safely travel home the day after your surgery. Many patients find that they can work from home or on a computer during this time. Ibuprofen (Motrin) usually helps with mild discomfort, but prescription painkillers are available if needed.
Days 12 - 14
Suture Removal: For FUT (HUE or HUE+ procedures), a simple suture must be removed by a medical professional 12-14 days after the procedure. This can be done at our clinic, by your primary care doctor, or at a local urgent care center. FUE procedures, on the other hand, do not require sutures or suture removal.
Weeks 2 - 3
Healing Phase: The donor area will continue to recover, and scabs will begin to clear. By the end of the second week, most of the scabs in the grafted area should be gone. During the first two weeks, patients can use doctor-approved cover-ups, such as bandanas, baseball caps, or doo rags if needed.
Months 1 - 3
Follicle Resting Phase: During this stage of recovery, hair follicles enter the resting phase of their growth cycle, appearing similar to how they looked before surgery. It’s important to be patient, as growth will resume soon.
Months 3 - 5
Anagen Phase: During this phase, you will start to notice new hair growth in the transplanted areas. Initially, the new hairs may appear thin or wispy, but this is normal. Over the coming months, they will thicken significantly.
Months 5 - 9
Maturation Phase: During this phase, significant new growth will be visible in the transplanted area. Hair typically grows at a rate of about half an inch per month, meaning some hairs may be around 3 inches or more by the end of this phase. As the process continues, the hair will begin to thicken and blend in with your existing hair, giving a more natural appearance.
1 Year
Track Success: By this point, most of the transplanted hair will have grown in. As it grows longer, the overall volume increases, creating a fuller look. The one-year mark is commonly used to assess success, although for some patients, it may take additional months to see the final results.
