It gets its name from the minuscule hooks on the leading edge of their primary feathers. When running a finger along the edges o the feathers from base to the tip it feels like touching a rough file. Also this swallow does not fly and glide as smooth as the other swallows do, because of it feathers.
Adults are uniformly plain brown above, with a white belly, and buff white brownish throat and upper breast.They have square tails and white under the tail covert. Its legs are short, and its feet adapted more for perching than walking.They are only 5 to 5 1/2 inches long.
Northern Rough-wing swallows , molts some of its feather while flying. It takes them around 100 days to finish growing new ones.
They feed over water taking small flying insects in midair or occasionally picking them from the water`s surface.
Unlike many other species of swallows, this bird tends to nest singly , or in very, very small groups.
