No other mainline into Chicago from the east boasts as much rail traffic or variety as that of Norfolk Southern’s Chicago Line. This high-density double track mainline sees a great deal of moves every day, from unit oil and ethanol moves to hot intermodals to general freights and everything in between. Additional moves from Amtrak’s Michigan and Eastern Services bring a good deal of passenger flavor to this corridor and we’ll see them too.
Pooled power is plentiful, and you’ll see examples of this from roads like Union Pacific, Canadian National, Ferromex and others. Haulage moves from Canadian Pacific and CSX also make appearances on their mains. Norfolk Southern’s Heritage Power also finds its way into the production, and we’ll see several of them on our journey, including the Pennsylvania, Lehigh Valley, Reading, Norfolk Southern, Central New Jersey and others. Endangered signals dating back to predecessors Pennsylvania and New York Central also form great backdrops for trains, at a time when NS is just starting to renew a lot of the lineside signal hardware on this western end of the system.
From urban railroading to gritty steel mill scenes to rural Indiana country sides, these places all combine to typify what this busy line is all about. Come witness the action as Volume 1 commences on Norfolk Southern’s Chicago Line, Chicago to Elkhart, by C. Vision Productions.
