As the death toll from the devastating flooding in Nepal continues to rise, a Rochester native who has spent years helping communities there is preparing for what could be a long recovery.
Dan Maurer founded the nonprofit Elevate Nepal more than a decade ago. The organization works with rural Nepali communities to provide resources including clean drinking water, sanitation and electricity.
Now, Maurer said the organization is preparing to help communities devastated by the flooding, but the scale of the disaster has made it difficult to determine exactly what is needed.
Elevate Nepal, which has experience responding to natural disasters, has launched a fundraiser and plans to coordinate with partners on the ground to determine where resources are needed most.
Maurer cautioned that the danger is not over. Nepal remains in its monsoon season, meaning additional flooding could further complicate recovery efforts.
"I want to jump on a plane and go over there and figure out the best way that we can help, but we need to be patient and again trust the partners on the ground for the best way to deploy on this thing," Maurer said.
He said the response will extend well beyond addressing the immediate destruction.
