Republicans are sounding alarms heading into the November midterm elections as polling shows Democrats with an early advantage in several key battleground states.
Vice President JD Vance hit the campaign trail in Michigan to support Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers, who is facing Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in a race Republicans see as a potential pickup opportunity.
"I'm not asking you to vote for Mike Rogers because you're going to agree with him 100% of the time," Vance said. "I'm asking you to vote for Mike Rogers because he's going to go to Washington and he's going to fight for you."
The campaign stop was organized by Make America Great Again Inc., President Donald Trump's super PAC.
Republicans are fighting to maintain their narrow Senate majority, but RealClearPolitics polling averages show Democratic candidates leading in eight of nine races considered battlegrounds, including Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio, Maine, Alaska and Texas.
Many of those races remain within typical polling margins of error, but the numbers are raising concerns among Republicans, particularly as affordability remains a major issue for voters.
"So the bottom line is this: Gas prices not looking like they're going to come down come Election Day could be a real disaster for Republicans, especially given the polling on inflation among independents," CNN's Harry Enten said.
Pollsters caution that the political landscape could still change significantly before the Nov. 3 election.
Patrick Ruffini, a pollster with Echelon Insights, noted that August polling has tended to lean more Democratic than final election results over the past several election cycles. He said some races, particularly in traditionally Republican states, could begin tightening after Labor Day.
