Can a non-duality approach be helpful in therapy? How can psychologists and other therapists use the non-dual understanding to help their patients find relief from suffering when they are struggling with overwhelm, depression or chaotic, out of control thoughts?

Rupert says: ‘The reason a chaotic mind or depression feels so overwhelming and unbearable is because the patient feels, “I am the mind – and it is completely chaotic and dark.” You need to help them see, “I am the space in which all this appears, and I am therefore already free of sorrow and chaos.”

‘How you do that as a therapist depends on the condition of your patient. I can speak very directly with you about these matters, but in your work you may have to translate it into something your patient can understand. You have to find a language or a methodology. It might not be speaking so directly, but that doesn’t matter – all that matters is that it’s effective.’
