How can letting go of someone be an expression of love? A mother who, despite her unconditional love for her son, often has to deal with his reactive behaviour, asks Rupert for advice.
Rupert says: ‘In your situation, there’s a case for stepping back a bit and giving your son space. In the context of the non-dual understanding it’s important, at one level, that your son is separate from you. You’re not withholding love – it’s an expression of love that gives him maximum freedom to be himself.
‘You stay present, open and loving, but you’re not going towards him or smothering him in affection. It’s a very tough sadhana for a mother, because you know you’re one, so why would you let go? But at the same time, at a more relative level, we have to let our children go.’
