Did anyone know Julie was a horse girl? Well the cats outta the bag this week as we experience something pretty remarkable, life with the Onaqui wild horses. About 60 miles southwest of Salt Lake City lives one of the last remaining herds of wild mustangs in Utah.
We drove the van down the 15 ish mile gravel stretch from Vernon to Simpson Springs, known as the Pony Express Rd. It offers a unique viewing window into the lives of some 100-120 stallions, mares, and occasionally foals. We camped out on BLM land and spent the better part of three days just admiring and filming the herd.
You can visit the herd yourself if you’d like, but always keep in mind a few things:
Never chase, attempt to feed, or pet a wild horse. These are wild animals, and they can kick with a speed of 200 mph
Never get between a stallion and his mares, aka his ladies, or a mare and her foal aka baby.
Dont change the landscape. Pack out what you pack in and dont drive off established roads
Most importantly, be respectful; you’re a visiting guest. To get a closer look (no closer than 100 ft minimum distance at all times) approach on foot. DO NOT APPROACH IN SIDE BY SIDES OR 4 WHEEL VEHICLES. You can frighten the horses and alter their habits.
For this trip, we rented some extra camera gear to make sure we could get sharp footage without being too close to the horses. If you’re interested, here’s all the gear we own/rented to make this unique opportunity a success!
