Almost everyone confuses science with technology. Most everyone out there believes that science is on the right track and that mathematicians who call themselves ‘physicists’ must know what they’re doing because otherwise we wouldn’t have the fantastic technology we have today. The ‘bomb’ certainly convinced the world’s brass that ‘scientists’ are out of this world.
It never dawned on all these misguided folk that technology advances through trial and error and that engineering is not science. It doesn’t follow that because you discover through trial and error that you can pick up pins with a magnet (technology) that you understand the nature of a magnetic ‘field’ (science). Just because you realize that things always fall to the ground and you can use this discovery to make weapons and gadgets and tools (engineering, technology), it doesn’t follow that you understand the cause of gravity (physics, science).
Not a single mathematician who styles himself as a ‘physicist’ on planet Earth can explain to you the CAUSE/MECHANISM underlying magnetism, gravity, and alll other invisible phenomena. After 2500 years!
And the reason is simple. Neither math nor experiments have anything to do with the question we are trying to answer: causes/mechanisms (i.e., science, physics). It is the mathematicians who have equated science with measurement and equations... because this is all that Mathematics allows them to do: describe.
