PART 2 of 5 // No one-word answers.
A great interview starts with great questions. Before I interview anyone I make sure that I have my questions organized in some kind of notes app. It can be in Google Docs, Notes, or anywhere else. I’ve even printed them out on paper and grabbed a clipboard 📋 so I could take quick notes while we’re talking.
If you’re documenting someone for a specific reason, make sure your questions flow into the main purpose of the interview and then back out of it. I usually start with easier questions in the beginning and then gradually go deeper and deeper into the topic but remember 🗣️ THE QUESTIONS ARE JUST A BLUEPRINT.
Be open to new stories during the interview. It’s okay to go on a tangent. When I interviewed my parents about progress for a YouTube Originals documentary — I did not plan to focus on desegregation but as we moved through my questions I realized they each had a unique experience of it even though they grew up in the same city only miles away from each other. So, I let the interview (and the subsequent film) lean into that.
Review your questions with a critical eye and ask yourself, “can this be answered with a simple yes or no?” If so, rephrase it so that’s impossible. I’ll see you here tomorrow with another tip.
