This is not a theory roundup. Two claims, both mine, and you can hold me to both.
One, on when. There was never a missing emoji, and nearly every date model out there is anchored one day wrong. The Frontiers anniversary trailer went up on 9 August 2021, not the 10th - it is timestamped on IGN's and Xbox's channels. Hello Games post on the Monday. In 2021 the 9th was the Monday; in 2026 the 9th was a Sunday, so it slid to the 10th.
Anchor to the Monday and Frontiers maps onto COSMOS exactly. Name on the Monday. Emoji 18 days later, on a Friday. Update 5 days after that, on a Wednesday. Frontiers: Mon 9 Aug, Fri 27 Aug, Wed 1 Sept. COSMOS: Mon 10 Aug, Fri 28 Aug, Wed 2 Sept.
So the shape is a Friday emoji and the Wednesday five days after it. The open question is which week. In-game, the Community Research timer runs out on Friday 4 September, the Quicksilver store has not rotated and the Twitch rewards are gone. If they are waiting for that cycle, it is Friday 4 September and Wednesday the 9th instead. I lean slightly to the later pair.
The popular Steam-discount model says 26 August. If that were right the emoji would have come on Friday 21 August. It did not.
Two, on what. The spacewalk already exists in No Man's Sky, locked to Corvettes since Voyagers. I think COSMOS gives it to everyone, and that this is the change every other space theory depends on. There are three ships in the COSMOS key art and all three are fighters, which are exactly the ships you cannot get out of.
Nothing here is confirmed. These are my thoughts on the general speculations.
