Dana McCaffery died of whooping cough after possible exposure at her older sister's childcare centre. Her parents learned after her death that there had been six recent notifications of whooping cough at the centre their older daughter attended.
The family lives in an area with an unacceptably low rate of community immunisation against infectious diseases and was experiencing a local outbreak of whooping cough when Dana McCaffery was born.
In response to advocacy by the McCafferys and others, new parents and expectant mothers are now recommended to receive boosters against whooping cough (pertussis).
