Ever wonder if LFP (LiFePO4) is really safer than NMC lithium ion batteries. In this video I drive two similar sized cells to thermal runaway or full breakdown. We find out if LFP is safer than NMC and you can decide if NMC is worth having.
NMC is more power dense but it has a markedly shorter life span. Automotive is switching maybe the time for NMC is over?

6.8v the cell popped open
this took a while and the cell accepted full current
13v and 192F the smoke erupted
the call became a short circuit
NMC
6.0v 152F the cell leaked it's first whiff of bad smelling smoke
the cell started accepting lower current
10.9v 157f the cell erupted in fire
the cell became an open circuit (it was really gone at this point)
