The Nitro Deck 2 for Nintendo Switch 2 is finally here! After several delays, CRKD’s successor to the original Nitro Deck has arrived, and in this video I’m unboxing it, setting it up with my Switch 2, taking a closer look at its features, and sharing my first impressions.
The original Nitro Deck launched for the Nintendo Switch a few years ago as an alternative way to play in handheld mode. Instead of attaching separate Joy-Con to either side, you slide the entire console into the controller to create one large, deck-style handheld.
Now CRKD is back with the Nitro Deck 2, redesigned for the Nintendo Switch 2 with some interesting new features and improvements.
Inside the box, you get the Nitro Deck 2 itself, a cloth carrying pouch, and an adapter that also allows you to use it with the original Nintendo Switch.
I went with the White Edition, which I think looks really clean, but CRKD also offers the Nitro Deck 2 in Smoke Black, Pal Grey, and an LRG Fusion Limited Edition.
One of the most interesting features of the Nitro Deck 2 is its new capacitive thumbsticks. The sensitivity of the sticks can be fine-tuned using the adjustment rings surrounding them, which is something I’m definitely interested in putting to the test.
The Nitro Deck 2 also uses non-clicky membrane face buttons, triggers and D-pad. From my initial time with it, the controller feels very comfortable in the hands. The overall size and ergonomics actually remind me a little of the Steam Deck, giving the Switch 2 a much larger and more substantial handheld feel.
Installing the Nintendo Switch 2 is also a little different this time around. A mechanism on the back allows the Nitro Deck 2 to slide open, after which you remove the center piece, insert your Switch 2, slide everything back together and lock it into place.
But this is only my unboxing and first impressions!
I’m going to spend the next several days testing the Nitro Deck 2, including its controls, thumbsticks, ergonomics, features and overall gaming experience. I’ll be putting together a full in-depth review to find out whether the Nitro Deck 2 is actually worth buying for the Nintendo Switch 2.
