The NYXI Hyperion 3 Ultra is a new premium wireless Joy-Con alternative designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2. It keeps the same chunky shape and comfortable ergonomics that I really liked about the original Hyperion 3, while addressing some of its biggest shortcomings.
One of the biggest upgrades is the move from Hall Effect sticks to new TMR thumbsticks. They’re tall, extremely smooth and precise, and use silicone glide rings that prevent the sticks from rubbing against the stick gates. In terms of overall smoothness and feel, these are some of the best thumbsticks I’ve used on a third-party Switch 2 controller.
NYXI has also added HD Rumble 2, which is a massive improvement over the standard rumble found in the original Hyperion 3. You now also get NFC support for Amiibo and the long-awaited mouse mode, making the Ultra much more feature-complete compared to Nintendo’s official Switch 2 Joy-Con.
Mouse mode isn’t perfect, though. While it works well on a mouse pad, I found it considerably more dependent on the surface than Nintendo’s official Joy-Con 2. That’s one of the few areas where Nintendo still has a clear advantage.
The D-pad has also been upgraded from plastic to metal, while the face buttons, shoulder buttons and triggers continue to use the same clicky microswitches as the original Hyperion 3. Whether that’s a good thing will depend heavily on how much you like microswitch buttons.
You also still get 9-axis gyro, customizable RGB lighting, turbo functionality, programmable GL and GR rear buttons, macro support, wireless wake from sleep, system-level button remapping, the Switch 2 C button, and the included wireless charging grip.
Most importantly, the Hyperion 3 Ultra uses the native Switch 2 communication protocol, so it feels much more integrated with the console than many third-party controllers.
But then there’s the price.
At $200 MSRP, the NYXI Hyperion 3 Ultra costs twice as much as a pair of official Switch 2 Joy-Con. NYXI regularly discounts its controllers, though, and with the additional $20 discount using code NINTENDOZER, that price becomes a lot easier to justify.
So are the NYXI Hyperion 3 Ultras the best Joy-Con alternatives for Nintendo Switch 2? Are the improved TMR sticks, HD Rumble 2, mouse mode and NFC support enough to justify the premium price? And if you already own the original Hyperion 3, is the Ultra actually worth upgrading to?
