Colorado Springs Magnifying Transmitter
The magnifying transmitter was an enhanced harmonic oscillator of the electrical Tesla coil that was used to wirelessly transmit electrical energy. Nikola Tesla's invention was a high-voltage, air-core, self-regenerative resonant transformer that produced extremely high voltages at a high frequency. The first "magnifier" was built in New York City between 1895 and 1898. In 1899, a larger magnifying transmitter was built in Colorado Springs and was utilized to undertake early tests in wireless telephony and electrical power transmission.
It had a diameter of 51 feet, a working potential of 3.5 - 4 million volts, and could generate electrical discharges longer than 100 feet. Residents in Colorado Springs near the lab reported sparks emitted from the ground and passing through their shoes. Electrical sparks may be seen from the nearby water main, which was occasionally utilized as a ground connection. The laboratory's surroundings would glow with a blue plasma corona. One of Tesla's tests harmed a Colorado Springs Electric Company generator by back-feeding high radio frequencies into the city's power distribution network.
