BBC Archive | Nicholas Saunders - Bubble blower, author, inventor | BBC Archive presents... @BBCArchive | Uploaded July 2024 | Updated October 2024, 12 hours ago.
If ever someone was made to pique the interest of the producers of Braden's Week and Nationwide, it was Nicholas Saunders. They first discovered him when investigating the source of bubbles blowing up into the streets of London's Earls Court that intrigued and mystified passers-by in equal measure in November 1968. His explanation? "I wanted to do something really useless and I think I've done it."
In 1971, Nationwide visited him to discuss his guidebook to England's capital titled Alternative London - A Survival Guide for Strangers, informing intrepid residents and visitors of a range of available things and places somewhat off the beaten track.
Perhaps sensing that black and white film couldn't quite do justice to Saunders' unique living space, Braden's Week returned in 1972 with their colour cameras to take the full tour, including the egg room, ducks inside and out, a rabbit on the roof and goldfish in the cistern.
