This is a video shot at 3000 fps of an experiment in our lab. It is a laminar premixed flame inside a quartz tube. The unsteady heat release from the flame interacts with the acoustic field giving rise to thermoacoustic oscillations, a major concern for rocket engine and gas turbine engine manufacturers. What you can see is a perturbation at the base of the flame, which convects down the flame front, and pinches-off at the flame tip.

In the lab, an audible sound is heard at 300 Hz, the frequency at which the perturbations to the flame front are occurring.
