Gillian Tindall is a weaver of tales. The celebrated author of Footprints in Paris, The Man who Drew London and The House by The Thames and the People Who Lived There has now capped her career with the most interesting book of the bunch.
Once again, Three Houses, Many Lives lives up to its title, this time being a historical reconstruction of an old Cotswold vicarage, a former girls' boarding school (where the author herself was educated), and a Jacobean house. Delving into ancient archives, parish records and accounts by the colourful residents themselves, she has woven a tapestry from the lives of ordinary people, rich and poor, into an absorbing amalgam of social history
From an autocratic vicar to a keeper of cows who sold out to the railways, and with a strong shot of scandal for good measure in between, this is vintage Tindall and first-class fare for readers who like their history in short, digestible doses.
Pricey, but worth every penny. Wonderful stuff from a seasoned hand.
