Harvestworks New Waves in Art and Tech Exhibition, Governors Island 2024
This documentary serves as a record of the Harvestworks 2024 New Waves in Art and Tech exhibition, which took place as part of our Art and Technology Program on Governors Island. The group show marked the season's opening with studies in human perception through artworks that explored themes of privacy, brain-computer interfaces, climate and fungal networks, Artificial Intelligence, and the concepts of air, flying, and floating. The showcased works utilized creative technology such as audio spatialization, stochastic audio, gesture interfaces, AI, biotechnology, and simple motorized devices.

The Executive Director of Harvestworks, the digital media arts center located in New York City. Since 1987, her focus has been on the development of experimental artworks that explore sound, data and other emerging technologies. She was here to talk about the whole exhibition.
About the Harvestworks Art and Technology Program on Governors Island
The Art and Technology Program on Governors Island centered on artworks created at the intersection of art and technology and formed a part of our Creative Residency and Sponsored Projects programs. The program included artists' open studios, exhibitions of digital media art, public workshops, and performances at our educational research facility in Nolan Park. The aim was to provide exhibition opportunities to electronic media artists and educate the public on how new and emerging technologies are employed in artistic expressions.

Founded as a not-for-profit organization by artists in 1977, Harvestworks’ mission has been to support the creation and presentation of artworks achieved through the use of new and evolving technologies. The organization creates an environment where artists can develop work inspired and executed through electronic media, offering a public context for the appreciation of new art, and bringing together practitioners from various art forms collaborating in the use of electronic media. Harvestworks offers assistance through commissions and residencies, production services, educational programs, and the presentation and distribution of their work.

Inherent Uncertainty is led by sound artist Clinton Van Arnam, currently a student in the Design Media Arts program and part of the UCLA Art Sci collective.
This project was conceptualized with the intent of composing and amplifying the live data analysis of Johns Hopkins Covid-19 worldwide data including recovered, deaths, and total cases. Data is sent through custom software into analog and digital synthesizers which trigger visuals formed by news clips recorded on June 1st, 2020 during the protests that followed the death of George Floyd.
The title Inherent Uncertainty represents our current state of affairs and the systems we are seeing crumble before our own eyes. As the viewer listens to the sound shift and change, these shifts are simply the analysis and the parallelity of the destruction of the virus. This project explores the unpredictability of our future and the thin veneer that we define as a ‘civil’ society.

We are created from stardust by nuclear fusion, like our myriad siblings – animals, plants, insects, plankton, bacteria, and viruses, and we all function together in vibratory fields – bottom up just as nature and nanotechnology works. [Alien] Star Dust rains on us every day and this piece brings these particles to our attention and reminds us of our interconnected heritage in the larger cosmos.
Premiering with the support of Harvestworks, this work is meant to be experienced as a guided meditation bringing to life the sensations of meteorites and micro-meteorites falling on all continents and mixing with the anthropogenic dust falling on our planet from many dimensions. Layers of sounds from inner and outer space with animations of dust and data driven by corona deaths are presented with the intent of honoring those who left their bodies without preparation and all who are suffering.
