The mental abilities of crows and parrots are 'as sophisticated and diverse as those of apes.'
This includes abilities such as delay of gratification and reasoning - and these skills aren't just used when foraging for food.
Professor Gunturkun, one of the lead researchers, said ‘Among other things, crows are capable of thinking logically, of recognising themselves in the mirror and of empathy.
Birds and apes use different brain structures to think, the research shows.
Mammals’ cognitive skills are controlled by part of the brain called the neocortex.
Birds do not have this structure, but manage complex mental tasks with a structure called the pallium.
At the end of last year, a study showed that crows have the reasoning ability rivalling a human seven year old.
They came to this conclusion after subjecting six wild New
Caledonian crows to a battery of tests designed to challenge their understanding of cause and effect, including test where crows understood volume displacement in water.
