Welcome Flip Clock Fans
You're looking at the New Haven Flip Clock
These clocks first appeared around 1937 and could still be seen as late as 1939. An advertisement at that time described the clock as “The New Haven Time Flip … a modern masterpiece by New Haven that gives you the time accurately and precisely, just like you would speak it."
The electric powered clock is composed of wood - mahogany accented with white holly, a glass cylinder and metal flip tiles.
The clocks were manufactured during a very tumultuous period in US History.
The 1930s was the era of the Great Depression, America was plagued with severe drought a time known as the Dust Bowl. Gangsters and criminals like Bonny and Clyde, Baby Face Nelson and John Dillinger and others plagued the country. In 1937, the Great Flood of '37 affected over 150 cities along the Ohio river from Pennsylvania to Illinois, especially devastating Louisville Ky and contributing to at least 500 deaths. In that same year, the Hindenburg burned at the mooring post and Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. If that wasn't enough, World War II was just around the corner.
The Rare New Haven Flip Clock. One of the prized historic flip clocks in the FlipClockFans collection.
