He Toi Whakairo: The Art of Māori Carving opens at Te Papa next month, with 147 taonga from the 1300s to the modern day.

Co-curator Jana Pātete (Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Kuia) told RNZ you can see the Pasifika influence coming through in the style of the oldest whakairo in the exhibition, linking back to Māori origins in Te Moana Nui a Kiwa.
