My dad was a truck driver. When he got his two-weeks vacation he could think of nothing better to do than to take a road trip, with the family and his trusty old Kodak 8mm. His routine was to bed us kids down in the family Suburban on the night we were to leave, catch a few hours sleep himself, then get up in the middle of the night and hit the road. We never knew what exciting new vistas would greet us when we woke up in the morning. It was almost as much fun as Christmas. In 1951 and again in 1952 we did the New England states.
This video presents the best of the movies from those two trips and shows an America that once was but is no more. The opening scene is at Niagara Falls. From there we go to Lake Placid, then on to Mt. Washington and down the coast to Boston, with stops at Lexington and Concord, Old Sturbridge Village, and Edaville. Finally New York City and Valley Forge.
The titles are souvenir postcards that I still have from that trip, and the soudtrack features the pop songs that we would have heard on the car radio at that time.
