In Part 1, originally posted in April 2008, we began our odyssey on the Chesapeake & Ohios Sportsman from Columbus to Marion, OH, and the Erie/Lackawanna Lake Cities from Marion to Chicago, IL where we rode a fan trip over the Chicago Transit Authoritys entire system ion the old (even then) Insul Cars.
In Part 2, we continued on Chicago & Northwesterns #1 to Sterling, IL to see a 0-8-0 working the plant railroad at Northwestern Steel & Wire. Then we returned to Chicago for a trip to South Bend, IN on the South Shore Line, billed as Americas last interurban railroad.
In Part 3 we return to Chicago on the South Shore Line with a stop to explore activity around the shops and yard at Michigan City, IN.
Now, in Part 4, we make the overnight trip from Chicago to Philadelphia, PA on board PennCentrals Broadway Limited. We spend a few hours exploring the Red Arrow Lines and then its on to Baltimore, MD where we enjoy watching the Corridor traffic before continuing on to Washington DC. From there we make the overnight journey to Detroit, MI on Baltimore & Ohio #5-19, the Capital-Detroit, and wrap up our Odyssey on C&Os Sportsman back to Columbus.
In only Five days: 2500 miles, five railroads, six name trains, an interurban and two rapid transit lines, a steam powered industrial railroad, several good dining car meals, and two nights in Pullman car accommodations.
