The nineteenth century was an era of great expansion for Europe, and the emigrant drive from the 'old world' provided settlers for the 'new'. New Zealand - a new country, 12,000 miles from home - was settled by people not only from Britain, but also from all over Europe. Germany, France, Holland, Italy, Yugoslavia these countries, through their people, left their mark on a country half a world away.
