Emerson Smith tore his bicep and severed a nerve, and his right arm became paralyzed. He learned he took things for granted the hard way. Without his right arm, he felt weak and defeated. His confidence was at an all-time low.
Emerson found a Washington University doctor at Barnes-Jewish, who pioneered nerve transfer surgery. She moved nerves from one part of his arm to another, and restored his mobility and independence.
Emerson says he feels capable again, and wants to thank his surgeon for giving him the opportunity to regain something that was lost.
