Washington University Physicians at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital team up to explain our continuum of care for congenital heart disease. Congenital heart disease is a defect of the heart present at birth. An ultrasound around the 20-week point of a pregnancy is typically recommended to check for any critical heart defects. Around 90% of babies born with a congenital heart defect make it to adulthood. Since congenital heart disease is a lifelong diagnosis, patients must receive ongoing care from birth and childhood through adolescence and into their adult years.
