The deadly Nepal-Tibet disaster has exposed gaps in early warning systems for glacier-related hazards, says Soniya Rijal, a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Sydney's School of Project Management. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, she said warning systems need to go “beyond rain”, while informal community networks can also play an important role in alerting people to danger. She also discusses why the scale of the disaster may not have been anticipated despite known risks.
