On April 15, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the International Coral Reef Initiative announced that the world is now facing its fourth Global Coral Bleaching Event on record. This massive bleaching event, which began in early 2023, is affecting coral reefs in over 70 countries and territories across all major oceans. So far, more than 74% of global coral reefs have experienced extreme heat stress—surpassing previous bleaching records from 2014 to 2017, when 65% of reefs were affected.
In response, authorities in popular tourist spots like Pling Island in Phuket, Thailand, have closed access to coral sites, and the Maldives has temporarily halted all coastal development projects to minimize additional damage to stressed corals. The Atlantic Ocean has seen some of the highest levels of heat stress ever recorded, with temperatures 2–3 times higher than anything in NOAA’s historical satellite data.
In the Caribbean and South Atlantic, heat stress has reached critical levels, causing coral losses of up to 99% in some areas. Over the past year, 99.9% of Atlantic reef areas have suffered bleaching-level heat stress, leading to significant coral die-offs. Coral reef regions across the Pacific, southern Great Barrier Reef, and the Indian Ocean (like the Seychelles) have also experienced unprecedented heat levels.
The full impact of this marine heatwave will unfold in the coming months and years, but early reports are concerning. Many shallow-water corals in Florida, Mexico, and Puerto Rico are facing near-total mortality rates of 90–100%—a loss that could fundamentally alter these ecosystems.

![NOAA Satellites Monitor Hazardous Early Spring Storm
NOAA satellites have been tracking a major spring storm system pushing across the central United States this week. The system has prompted NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) to issue widespread weather alerts for everything from blizzard warnings to wind advisories and tornado watches across much of the country.

![Severe Thunderstorms Race Through the Midwest
Parts of the Midwest are cleaning up after severe thunderstorms barreled through the region on the night of Monday, July 15, 2024, bringing hurricane-force winds and multiple tornadoes around Chicago. More than 600 reports of damaging winds from Iowa to Michigan left over 350,000 customers without power Tuesday morning.
The storm complex was a derecho, or a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of fast-moving showers or thunderstorms. Storms first erupted during the mid-evening hours in central and eastern Iowa, bringing tennis-ball-size hail in Crawford. Initial storms began as rotating supercells, including one that spawned a tornado near Des Moines, then continued through northeastern Indiana along a 500-mile-long path before dissipating around 2 a.m. Tuesday. It toppled hundreds of trees, downed wires and power poles, ripped off roofs and damaged vehicles.
In Chicago, forecasters at the National Weather Service had to abandon their posts as a tornado approached, transferring warnings to a sister office in Gaylord, Michigan. These storms then merged into a cluster, reaching 55,000 feet in height. From there, the storms moved east along a stalled frontal boundary. Cooler air was present to the north, with very warm, moist air to the south. Storms tend to straddle boundaries, in this case, steering them into northern and central Illinois and then Chicago.

![NOAA Satellites Monitor Wildfires across the Southwest and Plains
Fire season in the Southwest and High Plains arrived early this year, fueled by gusty winds, low humidity, and dry conditions.
The most recent data from the U.S. Drought Monitor from April 21, 2022, shows that the region, particularly New Mexico, has been affected by significant drought conditions. New Mexico has been dealing with more than 20 blazes, including the Calf Canyon Fire, Cooks Peak Fire, and Mitchell Fire. In Arizona, the Crooks Fire has burned south of Prescott since last Monday, triggering numerous evacuation orders in the area. The fire is burning thick, dry, dead vegetation in very rugged terrain, where erratic winds and fire behavior is making conditions hazardous for firefighters.
Imagery from the GOES East satellite showed that the Calf Canyon Fire in New Mexico produced a pyrocumulonimbus cloud (also known as pyroCb) on April 22. This large fire burned hot, which caused air and moisture to rise, along with smoke and ash. When this combination reaches the upper atmosphere, it often cools and condenses to form pyroCb clouds or “fire clouds” over the blaze. Some of the moisture is already present in the atmosphere, while some of it also evaporates from burning plants fueling the fire below.
Parts of the High Plains have experienced windy, dry weather as well, which caused dust storms and fast-spreading wildfires. The fast-spreading Road 702 Fire in southwestern Nebraska that claimed the life of a former fire chief started in Kansas and raced northward through several counties. So far, it has consumed roughly 41,450 acres. By Thursday morning, it was 88 percent contained.
According to the National Interagency Fire Center, there were 11 large active fires burning across almost 223,800 acres across six states. Since the start of 2022, at least 21,181 wildfires have burned more than a million acres in the United States, well above the 10-year average through April. With so many fires burning well before the normal May or June start of the wildfire season, local officials say there is a much higher risk for the rest of the season.
