But please take a look at our newest video we took last winter in Essen, Germany.The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (German Zeche Zollverein) is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since December 14, 2001, and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.From the architect:The former coal mine Zeche Zollverein in Essen, an area of 100 hectares, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001. OMA was commissioned to develop a masterplan with the goal of finding a contemporary use for the site. The combined program of 12,000 m2 for the visitors centre, the Ruhrmuseum and the Metaform will be accommodated in the site's most impressive building: the Kohlenwäsche, a former factory for sorting coals. The new program will be added without removing the existing machines that dominate the building. An Entrance for the Museum-Island Berlin donotsettle 2019-08-12 | The Museum-Island in Berlin has a new building, the "James-Simon-Gallery" by David Chipperfield Architects. It opens 10 years after the "Neue Museum" which was renovated by the same architects and situated directly next to it. The new building serves as an entrance to the "Pergamonmuseum" and "Neue Museum" and manages to frame the public sphere in a clear continuity. Besides its aesthetic quality of materiality and form building upon antique and neo-classic architecture with integration of newest technology, the most astonishing aspect of the building is its accessibility. It enables access to those who are normally being disabled by our environment and symbolises it through an inviting elevator next to inviting stairs, humble and useable orientation system for blind people or embossed letters and braille on the railings.We were sceptical in the beginning but really got convinced by thebuilding. IS SOEKARNO-HATTAS AIRPORT TRAIN (RAILINK) FAILING? donotsettle 2019-01-03 | After the hype during its opening months, the popularity of this 3.7 trillion IDR investment is slowly evaporating. This airport link has not completely become the most favourite transport mode amongst air passengers. According to PT Railink, the average occupancy is only at 30% of the total capacity.The capacity of Railink has been improved over the year. By today, with the 6-car Bombardier EA203 type, it can accommodate 272 seating passengers in one go. With the frequency of 30 minutes, the maximum passengers per hour per direction (pphpd) touches 544. Even though this number is relatively low compared to other airport links, for example KLIA Express (624 pphpd), Airport Express Hong Kong (6216 pphpd), AREX Express Incheon (1824 pphpd) or Heathrow Express (1360 pphpd), it has potential to significantly reduce the stress of congestion on the airport spine road. If we assume 70% occupancy on every journey, Railink would be able to capture 23,610 passengers per day or 8.6 million per year, by disregarding non-passenger riders and Peak Hour Passenger factor at the airport. If the total origin-destination passengers at SHIA is 85% of 63 million annual passengers, Railink would be able contribute 16% shares of transport mode to and from the airport. It is considerably far better than the current share at around 5 to 7%. We can conclude that the train capacity is sufficient, but the share of Railink is unfortunately still below the line.There is assumption that the main reason of SHIA Railink’s under-performance is also due to its fare, but it is not. Railink offers a competitive price of 70,000 IDR for one-way journey. DAMRI Bus, in the other hand, would cost 40,000 IDR between the airport and Gambir Station. That makes Railink is only 75% more expensive. In Hong Kong, the price to take a one-way journey with Airport Express is 115 HKD, 155% higher compare to average Hong Kong Airport Busses fare of around 40-50 HKD. The other extreme examples are Shanghai Maglev that charges 5 times than normal metro line to Longyang road station and KLIA Express with 450% (55 MYR) more expensive than airport bus/ coaches that only costs 10 MYR. However, what should also be considered parallel with the price is the journey time. The more expensive price of airport links could worth 3 to 8 times extra speed from the slower mode. Even though Railink offers a fix duration of 46 minutes, it still has not yet reached the above-mentioned range. The issue does not only lie into the train speed, but also the way to get to the station, which brings us to the biggest concern and gap: connectivity.Dedicated Airport Trains typically connects main transport hub in the city to airports’ terminal or Ground Transportation Center (GTC). Airport Express in Hong Kong, for example, connects Hong Kong International Airport at the arrival level with the main Central station in Hong Kong island, where the passengers have other options to change the transport modal including bus, metro and ferry. The Airport Express also makes stop at Kowloon station, which has been planned and recently opened for High Speed Train station to Mainland China. In Kuala Lumpur, KLIA Express train brings passengers from main terminal at KLIA1 and KLIA2 Gateway (landside commercial area and GTC) to KL Sentral, the main intermodal hub in the city. From here, the passenger will be directly offered other options of transport modal such as LRT, bus and intercity train. Railink, however, attempts to connect Jakarta city center and the airport. But the key to minimize walking distance and level changes between transport modal is still missing. At the airport, Railink train stations are not connected to any of the three terminals. Instead, air passengers are required to change to the landside Airport People Mover (APM), so called Skytrain, to reach the closest APM station to terminal building. Ironically, from here, air passengers still not yet reach either the departure or arrival level. Worse still, from APM Terminal 1 and 2 stations, air passengers have to cross the kerb, which raises safety issue.Similar concern occurs at the station in the city. The current main Railink station, Sudirman (BNI City) have not yet offered intermodal connectivity. Hence, without knowing the future expansion plan, the presence of this station feels like a random decision. Manggarai and Bekasi, in the other hand, offers better intermodality to commuter train line, but still not the best option for non-Jakartans. Unfortunately, due to existing capacity and security system at Gambir station, Railink has not yet picked up riders from here, leaving the biggest potential source of passengers: Those who are coming from other cities with regional KAI’s trains. MVRDV Revisited : TEDA VILLAGE donotsettle 2018-05-10 | Apart from Tianjin Binhai Library, MVRDV has also one other project in Tianjin (China) which was built almost 10 years ago, called TEDA Village. Follow us to see how it looks like inside this area!From the Architects:TEDA Urban Fabric is an urban development and therefore it can be visited by walking through the streets of Tianjin. The buildings themselves are private homes so, when visiting, please respect the privacy of the residents.An urban plan for housing and retail in Tianjin, China combines a development of 75% towers and 25% low-rise typologies following the old street pattern, so as to densify a traditional urban setting. The re-introduction of Chinese residential typologies and creation of public space also feature as part of the plan.Recently, in China, many old neighbourhoods have been replaced by new ones. The existing urban patterns are being erased and new towns are built without any specific links to what was previously there. In case of TEDA town, re-using most of the existing tree-lined street produces a series of plots on which the program can be positioned. To combine the street feeling with the total requested amount of square meters, a mix of towers and low-rise typologies was proposed. Each tower is accompanied by an open space, opening up the dense pattern of the existing streets. The towers are positioned to maximise light and views while leaving enough space for low-rise developments. The low-rise housing is organized into archetypal patio houses and townhouses of 3 or 4 levels, surrounding courtyards with plants and water features. On the main streets, ground floors can be used as shops and studios. Parking is organized in several underground garages.In this way, a new neighbourhood is recreated that echoes the character of the old streets. A DAY AT THE HARBIN OPERA HOUSE - #donotsettle x MAD Architects donotsettle 2017-08-23 | This is the one we have been waiting for a looooong time! We are so happy the video is finally ready!Are you ready to be taken along for a day at the Harbin Opera House?This project has been on our list since its was first announced in 2013. Interest only sparked after seeing endless photos appear on our Instagram feed. We had to see this with our own eyes!With the help from MAD Architects, we ventured out to Harbin, a city in the north-east of China. A proper approach, always an essential part of visiting architecture, already proved mind-blowing. Rising up from the landscape, the fluid shapes form 2 venues, which encapsulate a large urban plaza. Arriving in the early morning, the plaza was already bursting with activity. What a beautiful sight for our still slightly tired eyes. From young kids to the elderly, the plaza proved to be a popular spot for Harbin’ers and tourists. And why wouldn’t it? With this architecture as backdrop, we could spend days on end observing every corner of this building. (OH WAIT! There is not one corner in this building. Everything blends together!!) We ventured along the ‘mountain flanks’ making our way up the building to arrive at a viewing platform overlooking the city and the landscape. Wow! It felt like a proper mountain hike. Visitors interacting with the building, forms the absolute highpoint of this visit. But then we hadn’t seen the interior yet!The interior is out of this world. There was no beginning, no end. It all blends together. The foyer is filled with light, merging interior and exterior. The Grand Hall, is well, Grand. In every possible meaning of the word. The interior forms spaces after space, each with its own views, own feelings, evoking different emotions. The whole day was leading up to this moment, the whole visit was crafted around this last climax. Lights go dark and a group of well dressed young musicians enter the stage. Sounds are produced, creating an atmosphere that possibly only could happen in this space. Wow, what an experience, what a moment. This building is not just a building. It’s a journey, an experience. This building is ARCHITECTURE.We are so happy to finally have seen this project in person. We hope this video captured the feeling visiting this architecture from a new perspective.If you ever have the chance to visit Harbin, runnnnn to this building. You will not be disappointed. Thank you for the great team at MAD Architects to make this visit possible. We can not wait to be immersed by more mad architecture soon. We had the chance to enter this exhibition center/event space pre-opening thanks to the nice people at OMA who coordinated. This building is the connecting element between old and present, between city and river, between industry and service sector. Thats a lot of link into a not that big building. And there is sure a lot to talk about!It is a building that reveals itself the more you observe. It seems robust and closed off at first sight. However looking more closely it’s subtle and delicate.
