Matrix ONEs Circular Approach | 2023 | MVRDV MVRDV 2023-05-24 | Matrix ONE, the newly completed laboratory and office complex that serves as the main building in Amsterdam's Matrix Innovation Center, is designed to be demountable, so that 90% of the building's materials can be reused. In order to make this possible, elements are separated into categories based on their expected lifespans – furniture, for example, has the shortest lifespan, and the supporting structure the longest – and categories with shorter lifespans can be upgraded or removed without impacting those with longer lifespans. DEPOT - Reflecting Boijmans| Trailer | A documentary by Sonia Herman Dolz MVRDV 2023-01-13 | "DEPOT – Reflecting Boijmans", a new documentary by Sonia Herman Dolz about the creation of the MVRDV-designed Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, will receive its world premiere at the end of this month at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film follows MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen director Sjarel Ex during the design and construction of the depot. At the same time, the museum’s main building closed for a major renovation. Maas founded the institution The Why Factory a global think-tank and research institute. It explores possibilities for the development of our cities by focusing on the production of models and visualisations for cities of the future and is the perfect case study for this lecture. The Why Factory’s team will also be teaching in Prague. Under their guidance, students will seek alternative visions for the development of cities and the planet. The subtitle of the series "Time for Change" expresses the need to rethink the way society responds to accelerating climate change. The November lectures at the Faculty of Architecture of the CTU, will offer a new perspective on the future of cities and will feature four international figures in architecture, urbanism and design who share a visionary and radical approach. Beyond Lux(e), Towards Ecotopia | 2022 | MVRDV MVRDV 2022-10-06 | Developed as part of MVRDV’s Beyond Lux(e), Towards Ecotopia proposal for the Luxembourg in Transition consultation, the Ecotopia Monitor is a tool that converts carbon footprints and a variety of other inputs such as food production and urban density to output a single number in the form of a land area metric. For example, the analysis of Luxembourg’s current situation found that under a “business as usual” approach, Luxembourg would need a land area 13.8 times its current size to be carbon-neutral by 2050. Using the analysis of the Ecotopia Monitor, planners, urban designers, and policy makers can investigate approaches to reducing carbon emissions, as well as developing ways in which different land uses can overlap to dramatically reduce the land area necessary to support human needs. SolarScape | MVRDV NEXT MVRDV 2022-09-19 | SolarScape is a speculative research project by MVRDV NEXT, MVRDV’s research and development unit for new experimental technologies. The project investigates the possibilities of a shift from absolute constraints in public building policies to performative environmental simulations, enabled by technological innovations such as digital twins, urban data collection, and more advanced simulations. Using a “voxelised” version of virtual city models and environmental daylight simulations, it proposes a computational methodology that visualises the impact of public policy on future urban developments. The resulting software offers a tool for negotiation between urban stakeholders: it allows developers to identify the sites with the best development potential, while allowing municipalities to visualise the impacts of their policy and ensure high quality additions to the city that are in the public interest.SolarScape will be presented at the International Architecture Biennale of Rotterdam. To enable this growth, in 2015 the government formed the Jiangbei New Area, expanding Nanjing to the west across the Yangtze River. High Profile | 2022 | MVRDV MVRDV 2022-06-07 | On June 7 at Milan Design Week, MVRDV and Delta Light will present the High Profile series, a range of luminaires inspired by residual product: leftover aluminium profiles. The design looks critically at the manufacturing process, finding not only opportunity, but also beauty in elements that are normally discarded as waste.Profile lighting is a key part of architecture, but offcuts are often a residual product. These scrap elements became the starting point of the design. By varying the scale and size of the extensive Delta Light profile range, a series of luminaires could be created from this element. The High Profile series presents a cube-shaped pendant luminaire, a wall fixture in the shape of an arch, and a freestanding model with profiles placed side by side. The Hills | 2022 | MVRDV MVRDV 2022-05-30 | MVRDV has revealed the design for The Hills, the firm’s first project in South America. Designed for Quito-based developer Uribe Schwarzkopf, the project is located on the Guayas riverfront in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The self-sustaining valley embraces the history of the area: the mosaic of 10,000 existing plots will be preserved and reinforced by lining plots with canals, public paths, and greenery. On each plot, different species will be planted. Shanghai Plaza 66 – one of the largest and most popular shopping malls in Shanghai – is now the home of a new Bulgari flagship store at Shanghai’s Nanjing Road. The new store features a green, jade-like façade designed by MVRDV, made from brass and recycled champagne, beer, and other glass bottles. Language: Dutch | Expo 2000 MVRDV 2021-12-02 | In MVRDV’s early years, we designed the Dutch Pavilion at the 2000 World Expo in Hannover. The design was a response to the Dutch theme for the Expo, “Holland Creates Space”. Instead of occupying the full site, six Dutch landscapes were stacked into a tower on one portion of the site, while the remainder of the area became an open outdoor space within the Expo grounds. The project is currently being transformed into a co-working office building, and two new buildings will be added on the space surrounding the pavilion, one containing student housing and the other hosting offices and parking.Would you like to know more about this unique project? Idea Factory | 2021 | MVRDV MVRDV 2021-11-25 | MVRDV has completed construction of the Idea Factory, a transformation of a former factory building in the Shenzhen urban village of Nantou that sustainably reusing and improving the building instead of demolishing and rebuilding it. MVRDV 2021-11-20 | Narrative is highly important in architecture, but the concept is multifaceted and subject to personal interpretation. How can architects create visual narratives that clearly convey the story behind their projects? Our associate design director Gijs Rikken gives a lecture at the European Architectural Envisioning Conference. He talks about MVRDV projects such as The Imprint, Glass Farm and Crystal Houses. Associate Design Director Gijs Rikken joined MVRDV in 2007 after completing his Master of Architecture at the Eindhoven University of Technology. As Design Director for Studio 8, Rikken drives design direction for the development and execution of a wide variety of projects in the Netherlands and abroad, ranging from large-scale, complex buildings to detailed innovative materials research. Rikken’s core strengths lie in the translation of the brief into a design underpinned by intrinsic MVRDV values. His technical background influences his fascination for materials and (innovative) materials research, which he applies to support the office’s theoretical ambitions. LGBTQ2+ National Monument | 2021 | MVRDV MVRDV 2021-11-16 | The Lens, MVRDV’s competition proposal for Canada’s LGBTQ2+ National Monument dedicated to Canada’s Queer community – in particular those who endured what is now termed the LGBT Purge – has been selected as a finalist and is now available for public viewing on the Government of Canada’s Department of National Heritage website. Designed as part of a team that is led by Canadian office Fathom Studio in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and includes Two Row Architect from Six Nations of the Grand River, the Lens represents a striking new addition to the collection of monuments that encircle Ottawa’s Confederation Boulevard.Located on a sheltered 6300 m2 site facing the majestic Ottawa River, just a few steps from the Parliament Buildings to the east and Chaudière Falls to the west, the Monument and park are a place for education, memorialization, celebration, and inspiration.
