The desperate final years of the Second World War forced aviation engineers to push beyond the limits of traditional flight. The vintage archival footage showcased in this comprehensive documentary has been upscaled and restored, appearing in authentic colorized versions to illuminate the historical reality of experimental rocket planes. Facing overwhelming Allied bomber fleets, the German Luftwaffe sought radical solutions. Enter the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, a swept-wing, tailless aircraft powered by a highly volatile mixture of C-Stoff and T-Stoff. Capable of approaching the speed of sound, the Komet was described as flying a "runaway train," causing more losses from fuel explosions and landing accidents than enemy action.
As the Axis powers lost control of the skies, even more extreme concepts were realized, such as the Bachem Ba 349 Natter. Conceived as a manned surface-to-air missile, this wooden aircraft launched vertically using solid booster rockets, intending for the pilot to fire a salvo of unguided rockets before parachuting to safety. The tragedy of its first and only manned launch, which killed 22-year-old pilot Lothar Sieber, underscored the suicidal desperation of the Nazi regime. Yet, the foundational concepts of liquid propulsion, vertical takeoff, and solid boosters would ironically pave the way for the modern space shuttle and Wernher von Braun's pivotal role in the United States space program.
