As the bitter winter of 1944 set in, the young infantrymen of the 84th Division were thrust into the unforgiving mud of the Siegfried Line. Facing rusty pillboxes, blinding blizzards, and desperate Panzer units, these American soldiers fought tenaciously to breach the heavily fortified German borders. First-hand accounts from veterans detail the sheer terror and bravery required to take strategic strongholds like Geilenkirchen, where combat devolved into brutal, block-by-block engagements against SS troops.
When the Germans launched their desperate "Watch on the Rhine" offensive, better known as the Battle of the Bulge, the 84th Division was hastily redeployed to Marche, Belgium. In a fluid and chaotic situation, these soldiers dug frozen foxholes and faced down infiltrating enemy armor.
