The National Sanctuary of Cristo Rei is a monument and shrine in Almada, Portugal, overlooking the city of Lisbon. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Construction took 7 years. The giant statue was erected to express gratitude because the Portuguese were spared the direct destructive effects of World War II.
The statue itself is 82 feet tall and 82 feet wide and it sits on top of a 246 foot tall tower on the south bank of the Tagus River.
